Monica Miller - Associate Fellow
Monica R. Miller is a fourth year Ph.D. student and a UPenn pre-doctoral fellow working on her dissertation entitled - The Anti-Proper in the Popular: The Risky Religiosity of Hip-Hop Culture - where she is exploring the (de)construction, negotiation, (re)production, recasting, and role of religion in the material cultural practices of Hip-Hop culture specifically and popular culture in general. Monica holds research interests in religion and culture broadly with concentrations in postmodern theory, critical social thought, and theory and method in the study of religion. She currently has a research project in Habana, Cuba where she is researching youth culture, religion, and underground Hip Hop where she spent this past summer following various underground Hip-Hop groups in Centro Habana. In spare time, Monica is a pop culture junkie, where you can find her either talking rather loudly and excitedly about the latest happenings in Hollywood or in Barnes in Nobles catching up on her - junk magazine - obsession and also enjoys watching series such as the L-Word. She loves spending time with her partner and two adorable yorkies, Mia and Phoebe. Monica is from Long Island, New York and is crossing her fingers to graduate in May 2010.
