Calligraffiti: The Soul of Black Bottom / Manakeesh

What:

Want to see local street art with a transnational spirit? Want to learn more about the neighborhood and local community before it was relabeled as University City? Join us on a walk from Stouffer to the intersection of Market and Present to visit Philadelphia's first piece of Calligaffiti. The piece title "The Soul of Black Bottom" was completed last year by the Tunisian artist, el-Seed. It speaks to history of Black Bottom which is known to us as University City, as well to the transnational connections that link us all through humanism, language, and art. The piece is a translation of a W.E. Dubois quote into Arabic:

"I believe that all men, black and brown and white, are brothers, varying through time and opportunity, in form and gift and feature, but differing in no essential particular, and alike in soul and the possibility of infinite development."

After we check out the piece, we'll head to Manakeesh: a local Middle Eastern restaurant to get manakeesh. On the way we'll walk by local mosques and orient ourselves in relation to the local neighborhood we live in.

Only about six can attend. Please sign up with this google form:
