Welcome to "Martes con Marta” (Tuesdays with Marta).“  I updated my music series today, Tuesday, May 7th, 2024. I want to thank you for following the series this academic year, and wish you all the best during finals and your future endeavors!


These week's songs celebrates the Asian Pacific Heritage Month, which takes place in May!

Here are the featured songs:

1. “El Agua de Belén” (Belén’s Water) - Orquesta de La Luz - Japan:
This song was made famous by Tito Rodríguez, a very famous Puerto Rican singer, band leader, and TV host, known as “el inolvidable,” the unforgettable one. The lyrics suggest that whoever drinks Belén’s water, gets cured of any illnesses or evil things. The song is interpreted by Nora Shoji, who was the lead singer for Orquesta de La Luz. This orchestra originated in Tokyo Japan in 1984, and became famous all over Latin America and the USA.

2. "Garota de Ipanema” (The Girl from Ipanema) - Lisa Ono - Brasil/Japan:
The music for this Bossa Nova was composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim (a.k.a Tom Jobim), and the  lyrics are attributed to Vinícius de Moraes. Both artists were very famous Brazilian singers, musicians, and songwriters. The song is interpreted by Lisa Ono, a Brazilian singer and guitar player of Japanese descent. The lyrics describe a beautiful Brazilian woman as she walks towards the Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro.

3. “Olimpico” (Olympic) - Dimash Guadaibergen - Kazakhstan:
The music for this song belongs to Igor Krutoy, a Ukrainian/Russian composer, and the lyrics belong to Russian poet  Lilia Igorevna Vinogradova.  It is interpreted by Dimash Qudaibergen, an amazing Kazakh singer with a perfect pitch and spectacular vocal range. The lyrics encourage us to be strong and love each other, and also talk about freedom and brotherhood.
